The Flight Plan ensures that every student is treated like a VIP - a very INDIVIDUAL person. We focus on understanding who the student is, through conversations and observations.
The intended result of this program is to provide the tools for students to self-reflect, set goals, and succeed far beyond AOA.
All students in grades 3-12 meet individually with their teacher or advisor to discuss each of the four areas of focus: individual and academic in the fall, and social and extracurricular in the spring. During these meetings, the teacher selects an array of questions personalized to each student. Together, they set a goal or intention for each subcategory that the student will work towards over the course of the next 12 months. Students are encouraged to be active contributors in this program during one-on-one discussions with faculty throughout their AOA experience.
Flight Plan brings students and faculty members together to create a synergistic learning community. This collaborative environment encourages students to embrace dialogue, listen, question, and try out new ideas.
Flight Plan is a personalized goal-setting program that provides the tools needed for the success of each student in the areas of academics, self, extracurricular, and social development.
Once goals are identified for students, they are shared with each of their teachers, who will work collaboratively with them to create a plan for success. It begins with one-on-one in-depth conversations between the advisor and student. During these sessions, the advisor gains a deeper understanding of the student including challenges, successes, and ambitions for the future.
Students begin a process of self-discovery alongside their teachers. The goal is to empower students to see themselves as the authors of their own learning experiences. Through regular feedback and check-ins, the Flight Plan curriculum moves students towards increased academic independence and a focused academic goal. Through these meetings, students develop a wide range of skills including active inquiry, critical thinking, and team leadership. This program enables our students to gain a clear understanding of who they are as a student and an individual and empowers students to BE ANYTHING.

Mr. Harris, English Teacher
The Flight Plan at AOA has certainly helped me get to know my students' goals and needs. Besides learning about their academic ambitions, I also get to find out about their personal goals! With every half hour conversation, I hear something fascinating about these young men and women, hobbies and interests and dreams I wouldn't get without a Flight Plan. I have an advisee who spends her commute polishing her knowledge of Korean, another who has read dozens of books on financial literacy, and another who likes taking apart electronics and putting them back together. Without our Flight Plan, I would certainly not get as complete a view of my students, and this helps me make greater connections and provide short and long-term goal setting.
