Our History

It Began With a Vision

Founder's Day is an annual event that honors Margaret St. John Andrews, who was born on February 10, 1846.

Young visionaries Wallace Corydon Andrews and his wife, Margaret St. John Andrews, living in Willoughby, Ohio in 1877, were firm believers that women needed to be self-sufficient and self-reliant. They established The Andrews Institute for Girls in 1910 that reflected their belief in educating a young woman to be self-supporting. That school would continue to educate young women for decades to come.

In 1922, a young man was born in Lake County, Ohio, who would live a remarkable life, creating a legacy that will endure for all time in the history of Willoughby and Lake County. Jerome T. Osborne, after a most humble beginning, was known for his entrepreneurial spirit and unrelenting energy. Often referred to as one of the greatest businessmen of all time, his philanthropic endeavors may be what he is remembered for most. Jerry, as he was known to all, also had a love of education and learning. When both The Andrews School and the Phillips-Osborne School faced economical struggles in 2007, this visionary knew that to generously support and encourage the merger of both schools was the right thing to do. His legacy, just like those of the Andrews', will live on for generations to come.

Today, Andrews Osborne Academy remains the only private, independent, co-ed college preparatory day and boarding school for pre-kindergarten through twelfth grade in Lake County, Ohio. AOA continues stronger than ever as we add to the rich heritage of the School. We strive to honor the legacy of our past and follow our mission of preparing students for higher education by empowering them to be successful leaders, committed to serving in a global community.

The things that change aren’t nearly as important as the things that stay the same. Our commitment to the promise of every student remains…. Just as Wallace and Margaret Andrews and Jerry Osborne would have wanted.
