Lower School Academics

In the Lower School of Andrews Osborne Academy, your child’s cognitive, creative, social and physical abilities will develop and thrive in our loving, supportive, and warm environment. A safe, yet challenging learning environment is created through family involvement, collaboration, and intimate class settings where teachers get to know each student, how they learn, and what interests and motivates them.
Our academically challenging program addresses different learning styles while fostering critical thinking and developing problem solving skills. Our students acquire cognitive skills and learn to take risks, work cooperatively and make sound choices.

The classroom environment encourages self-reliance and independence. Students develop the confidence to approach new situations and challenges because teachers instill in them a sense of responsibility. Each child feels comfortable with learning while being challenged to progress to new levels.

  • Before and After School Care

Andrews Osborne Academy is sensitive to the growing needs of our families and therefore provides an Extended Day Program for students in the Lower and Middle Schools. The Lower School program offers both before and after school care while Middle School students who need to remain on campus after school can take advantage of supervised study time.

Extended Day is offered in the mornings from 7:00-8:00 a.m. and in the evenings from 3:00-6:00 p.m.

    • Extended Day can be used on a day-to-day, as needed basis.
    • In the mornings students are supervised while playing in the Pre-Kindergarten classroom. At 8:00 a.m. they are escorted to their classrooms to begin their school day.
    • To encourage age appropriate play and supervision, students who participate in the Extended Day program after school are separated into two groups (Pre-K through grade 1 and grades 2-5).
    • In order to give students the opportunity to unwind after their school day, after-school activities include use of the playground on campus (weather permitting), classroom games and gym time. After a period of active play time, students in grades 2-5 are taken to the library to allow for completion of any homework assignments, reading and general “quiet time”.
    • An after-school snack is provided as part of the registration fee.
    • The cost to participate in the Extended Day Program is $7.50 per hour. This fee is charged on a half-hour basis for time used and can be taken advantage of on a day-to-day or as needed basis. A $30 registration fee is charged per school year. A $15 fee will be charged for late pick-ups. Accounts are billed monthly.
    • Upon parental request, Extended Day employees are available to escort students to any after school programming offered at both AOA and the Willoughby Fine Arts Center.

Integrated Approach & Curriculum

Our interdisciplinary and integrated approach offers students the opportunity to learn and access information using a variety of avenues. Whether it is hiking our 300-acre campus or participating in our unique public speaking program, which begins in pre-school and continues throughout Upper School, our Lower School students are gaining the foundation they need to succeed with confidence.

The core curriculum in the Lower School includes literature-based reading, language arts, writing, math, social studies, science, foreign language, physical education, music, visual arts, and technology instruction.

In Lower School, We Believe

  • All of our students, even our youngest students, can learn to listen and speak with purpose.
  • All children can think creatively by nature, which we encourage through exploration, inquiry, problem-solving, and invention.
  • Understanding the world, locally and globally, and learning to see it from various perspectives are at the heart of developing our students’ sense of themselves as global citizens, teaching them to think deeply and critically about the world around them.
