Visual and Digital Arts

Introduction to Visual Art
  • Build artistic skills and creative thinking through the exploration of a variety of art themes, media and techniques
  • Practice implementing creative strategies and develop new ideas
  • Explore elements graphic design, print art and 3-D

Color & Design I and II
  • Develop a deeper understanding of the role that color, art and design play in our world
  • Learn advanced color mixing, composition and visual communication strategies with a variety of two-dimensional media potentially including, acrylic, watercolor, oil paint, colored pencil, pastels and/or printmaking

Sculpture and 3D Design I and II
  • Study a variety of sculptural themes and work in a wide variety of media
  • Learn the basic language of sculpture and design
  • Work with a variety of mediums: plaster, ceramics, cardboard, paper, wood, natural/found materials, fibers/fabric or multi-media installation
  • Develop theme that include form and function, the human body in sculpture, abstraction: simplification & exaggeration, artistic inspiration from nature, body adornment across cultures and/or our built urban environment
  • Investigate the online collections of various art museums and galleries around the world

Ceramics I, II and III
  • Explore clay through a variety of forming, glazing and firing techniques
  • Learn physical and chemical changes that occur to the clay thought out these processes
  • Create pieces after learning hand-building techniques such as pinching, coiling (hand and extruded) and slab building techniques.
  • Explore sculpture and create a bust of a person of their choice

Portfolio I and II
  • Develop a portfolio for college and for create a body of work to explore a theme of the students choosing for own creative expression and discovery
  • Create a portfolio of either two-dimensional work or three-dimensional work or a combination
  • Create a visual idea file by investigating various online collections of art museums and galleries worldwide

Advanced Media Design
  • The focus will be on advanced digital media projects that span multiple forms of media.
  • Students are required to explore advanced media projects from concept to completion.
  • Evidence based outcomes include student portfolios and presentations.  
  • This is a capstone course for the technology experience.

Digital Photography I
  • This course is designed to give students an introduction to the basics of photography including composition, basic lighting, manual and automatic settings, and photo editing.
  • Students will become familiar with the DSLR camera and its settings
  • throughout the semester.
  • This course is a great opportunity for students to begin to develop a digital art portfolio of their photography.

Digital Photography II
  • In this course students will improve their photography skills taking on challenges like lighting and portraiture.
  • Students will also study different genres of photo careers such as photojournalism, commercial photography, portraiture, and more.
  • Finally, students will add their new experiences to their portfolio.

Technology and Design
  • This is a foundation course for all Digital Arts classes. In this course students will develop skills needed to communicate visually in any media.
  • Students will learn how effective layouts, illustrations, photographs, animations, games and portfolios convey ideas through the principles of visual communication and design.
  • Students will experience a hands-on overview of industry standard design software for print and digital media.

Video and Animation
  • This course investigates motion graphics, digital video and animation using iMovie, Adobe AfterEffects, Adobe Premiere Pro, GarageBand, and Adobe Audition.
  • Best practices in creative thinking, planning, scriptwriting, storyboarding, workflow, and file management are emphasized.
