Andrija ‘Andro’ Filipovic, a senior at Andrews Osborne Academy, was recently named to the 2020 boys ‘All America Team’ by National Soccer Coaches, the leading organization for soccer coaches nationwide. 117 high school players in all (60 boys and 57 girls) were honored as All-Americans, including Filipovic, who may be the first from his native Montenegro, to earn the distinction.
In just two seasons at AOA, Filipovic smashed every existing offensive record at the school. In 31 total games,
he posted 46 goals, 18 assists, and 110 total points. After arriving at AOA from his hometown of Podgorica,
Montenegro in the fall of 2019, Andro burst onto the Ohio high school soccer scene, earning himself
significant attention. He led AOA to their first ever district championship game, was named team MVP, The
News-Herald Player of the Year, First Team All-Cleveland District, First Team All-Ohio and First Team
All-Great Lakes Region.
One would think that’s a very tough act to follow. However, during a COVID-disrupted 2020 season, despite
playing a more defensive role on the team at times (due to key injuries in the lineup), Andro proved to all that
2019 was no fluke. After leading AOA to another district championship game, he was named Greater
Cleveland Scholastic Soccer Coaches Association Division 3 Player of the Year, First Team All-Cleveland
District, First Team All-Ohio, First Team All-Great Lakes Region, and AOA’s first ever All-American.
Despite all the awards and accolades, Filipovic remained humble and hard-working every day, hallmark traits
that have earned him deep respect from teammates, opponents, and coaches alike. AOA’s varsity head soccer
coach, Bob Ahrens, went as far as to say, "In my 20 years of coaching high school soccer, Andro is the most
dynamic and game changing player I've ever had the pleasure of coaching. Add to that, Andro has always put his
team before his own success."
He hopes to continue his playing career at the college level next fall and is currently considering interest from a number of programs.
