Varsity Soccer Wraps Up Season as District Champs

Following an up and down regular season, AOA's Varsity Men's Soccer team returned back to the District Championship game this season, and found the result they were looking for one year ago.
It wasn't always the season everyone dreamed of. The 2021 Varsity squad had some big shoes to fill coming into the season, but also returned a number of players hungry to continue building on the success the Varsity squad in 2020 saw.

Last season, the Phoenix made a run to the District Title game in Division III. Rightfully so, expectations were high coming into this season, under the direction of new Head Coach Drago Dumbovic.

The 2021 season started off with a back and forth matchup with Open Door Christian School, resulting in a 3-2 AOA victory. From there, the road ahead wasn't always pretty, but key wins at the right times resulted in AOA heading into the playoffs as the #10 seed in their bracket despite a 4-8 regular season record.

Players within the team knew they had more to give, and kept believing that they could capitalize on their opportunities when the games became win or go home. The postseason started off with a bang when the fighting Phoenix won their first match by a jaw-dropping score of 13-0. Still 3 wins away from a District title, AOA met Canton Central Catholic away from home for the second time this season, and again coming out a winner, capping the Sectional Title for AOA.

One game away from the District Championship game, AOA pulled out a win against Norwayne High School in dramatic fashion, needing a 30-yard strike from Mikel Boehm into the back of the net in a sudden death Overtime period.

The only team that stood in Andrews Osborne Academy's way of their first ever team District title was Chippewa High School, who the Phoenix were able to put away by a score of 3-0 behind Freshmen Goalkeeper Alejandro Santos Zimmerman's third clean sheet of the postseason.

Unfortunately, that would be the last win of the 2021 season as they again fell at the hands of Kirtland High School. Coach Dumbovic will return a large portion of this year's team next year, where expectations for a successful season will again be high.
