Pre-Kindergarten (3 years old)

Pre-Kindergarten (4 years old)
  • Experience immersion in the target language

  • Sing songs in the target language
  • Make a miniature piñata

Kindergarten 
  • Experience immersion in the target language
  • Follow directions for multidisciplinary class projects intuitively and by context clues

  • Begin to recognize sight words in the target language

First Grade

  • Reference sections of the classroom as culturally and geographically authentic locales (free play)
  • Build vocabulary based on student interests through various drawing, painting, playing and building stations

Second Grade 
  • Begin to connect the written and spoken word in the target language
  • Identify some major contributions from the target culture (e.g., food, dance, music)
  • Memorize the names of at least twenty Spanish-speaking countries (floor map)
  • Apply high-frequency words and phrases in appropriate contexts
  • Demonstrate empathy and perspective taking in cultural discussions
  • Perform mini-plays and dialogues in the target language for the class
  • Build a 3-D pyramid model of El Castillo of Chichen Itza
  • Listen to Latin Rhythm ballroom dances and demonstrates proficiency of the basic steps in the Salsa, Merengue and Tango

Third Grade 
  • Sharpen pronunciation skills
  • Identify and begins to mimic different accents on a conscious level
  • Contribute to creative class stories (mixture of fiction and non-fiction)
  • Demonstrate comprehension of class stories through choral responses
  • Imagine other lifestyles and perspectives based on climate and geographical locations
  • Create and paint clay replicas of Easter Island Moai statues
  • Tell and retell original stories with a partner
  • Read short paragraphs in the target language

Fourth Grade 
  • Produce language in meaningful contexts (yearlong town simulation)
  • Create businesses based on student interests
  • Demonstrate willingness to take risks with the target language
  • Comprehend meaning without needing to understand every word
  • Restructure and/or simplifies thoughts to communicate basic messages
  • Begin to take apart memorized phrases and re-apply vocabulary in different situations
  • Replicate the street mercados and ferias of South America based on photos and class discussions

Fifth Grade 
  • Study Latin American legends in conjunction with the Latin American unit in their regular classroom
  • Recognize major tourist attractions and points of interest in Spanish-speaking countries
  • Perform Spanish plays for an audience as a culmination of their Lower School language study
  • Vary intonation and expression in the target language to create different settings and moods
  • Imagine a scene onstage, and then brainstorms ways to make the text-to-stage vision a reality
  • Recognize that translation is not literal in many cases
  • Begin to respond instinctually in the target language
  • Compare and contrasts linguistic systems
