Lower School Curriculum (PK-5)

Signature Programs

Pre-Kindergarten (4 years old)
  • Mother Goose Puppet Show: Select Mother Goose Rhyme, create a puppet and present the rhyme to an audience
  • Thanksgiving Feast: Culminate the learning of Thanksgiving’s history by presenting a program to parents then enjoy a family Thanksgiving feast 
  • Scientist for a Day: Perform a science experiment in front of an audience
  • Participate in various field trips that support classroom learning including trips to the fire station, tree farm and Lake Farmpark
Kindergarten 
  • Family Focus Week: Promote classroom community by assigning each family a week which allows the class to get to know the child and family on a more personal level
  • Mother’s Day Breakfast: Perform a signing program then share breakfast with mothers 
  • Valentine’s Day Tea: Share tea with guests while displaying learned etiquette skills 
  • Spring Play: Perform a production (recent play have included Peter Rabbit and Cook-a-Doodle-Doo!)
  • Participate in various field trips that support classroom learning including trips to Burton Century Village, an apple farm and Fine Arts Association
First Grade  
  • Passports to World Cultures Program: Culminate a year-long study of various cultures where each child researches and presents a country within a class performance which includes music, dance, and dialogue and ends in a feast of foods from around the world
  • Chocolate Factory: Support the learning of economics as the first grade collaborates with the fifth grade to create a chocolate factory where proceeds are donated. The unit culminates in a field trip to a chocolate factory
  • Participate in various field trips that support classroom learning including trips to Penitentiary Glen, the Cleveland Zoo and Fine Arts Association
Second Grade 
  • Patriotic Program: Culminate the study of The American Revolution by presenting a 30 minute program to families 
  • Nutrition Skit: Culminate the study of good nutrition by performing a 30 minute musical to families
  • Participate in various field trips supporting classroom learning including visits to the Cleveland Museum of Natural History and Fine Arts Association
Third Grade 
  • Ancient Egyptian Play and Feast: Culminate the study of Egypt by performing an Egyptian production to families. Prepare traditional egyptian foods which are shared at a feast
  • Mathematics Safari: Participate in morning of parent-run math stations reviewing and extending math concepts learned throughout the year
  • Participate in various field trips supporting classroom learning including visits to the Botanical Gardens, Science Center and Chapin Forest
Fourth Grade 
  • Shakespeare Play: Participate in a 40 minute production of one of Shakespeare’s plays using age appropriate scripts presented to families
  • Participate in Band as an elective (optional) - students not in band may join the library book club
  • Participate in various field trips supporting classroom learning including visits to Lakeview Cemetery, Garfield’s Home and an Amish farm
Fifth Grade 
  • PLUS Program: Peers Learning Usable Skills- covers a wide range of topics from smoking, drugs and alcohol to internet safety, anger management and conflict resolution, taught by PLUS trained police officer
  • Participate in Band as an elective (optional) - students not in band my join the library book club
  • Community service project: Work with Breckenridge Village throughout the year
  • Latin American Festival: Culminate the year-long study of Latin America with plays presented in Spanish 
  • Chocolate Factory: Support the learning of economics as the fifth grade collaborates with the first grade to create a chocolate factory where proceeds are donated. The unit culminates in a field trip to a chocolate factory
  • Fifth Grade Camp: Celebrate the end of Lower School with an overnight stay at Red Oak camp. Participate in two days of outdoor and team-bonding activities
  • Participate in various field trips supporting classroom learning including visits to Fine Arts Association and the Cleveland Orchestra
