Public Speaking

Pre-Kindergarten (3 years old)
  • Begin public speaking through sharing opportunities such as show and tell
Pre-Kindergarten (4 years old)
  • Develop comfort when speaking in front of others in a safe, familiar environment
  • Share “show and tell” items with classmates
  • Demonstration Speech 1: Conduct a science experiment and present results to classmates and parents
  • Poetry Recitation Speech 2: Recite a Mother Goose poem for a puppet show presented to classmates and parents
Kindergarten 
  • Develop basic public speaking skills (eye contact, pace, volume)
  • Informative Speech 1: Present “something special” at Lower School Assembly by describing the item and telling why it is important to the speaker
  • Informative Speech 2: Discuss three facts about an animal and create a visual representation of the animal presented at Lower School Assembly
First Grade 
  • Expand basic public speaking skills (eye contact, pace, volume)
  • Informative Speech 1: Present “something special” at Lower School Assembly by describing the item using multiple adjectives and explain why it is special
  • Book Report Speech 2: Share a summary of a book at Lower School Assembly. Highlight characters, setting, and events, as well as the speaker’s favorite part of the story including a poster or other visual aid
Second Grade 
  • Expand basic public speaking skills (eye contact, pace, volume)
  • Engage audience by “knowing” the speech, rather than reading the speech
  • Informative/Persuasive Speech 1: Present at Lower School Assembly different ways to be a good citizen at home, at school and in the community 
  • Biographical Speech 2: Create a life-size portrait of a person and present biographical information about his or her life accomplishments at Lower School Assembly
Third Grade 
  • Expand basic public speaking skills (eye contact, pace, volume)
  • Engage audience through expression and “knowing” the speech, rather than reading the speech
  • Poetry Recitation Speech 1: Recite a poem from memory and provide a personal interpretation at Lower School Assembly
  • Informative Speech 2: Research and provide a factual presentation on a chosen African animal at Lower School Assembly 
  • Optional Persuasive Speech (grades 3-5): Present campaign speeches at Lower School assembly if interested in running for student council offices (President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer and Sergeant at Arms)
Fourth Grade 
  • Expand basic public speaking skills (eye contact, pace, volume, use of gestures)
  • Engage audience through expression and “knowing” the speech, rather than reading the speech
  • Demonstration Speech 1: After giving the history and/or background information about an activity, students give a step-by-step demonstration at Lower School Assembly
  • Storytelling Speech 2: Students theatrically retell a traditional folktale from memory at Lower School Assembly
  • Optional Persuasive Speech (grades 3-5): Present campaign speeches at Lower School assembly if interested in running for student council offices (President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer and Sergeant at Arms)
Fifth Grade 
  • Expand basic public speaking skills (eye contact, pace, volume, use of gestures)
  • Engage audience through expression, developing “hooks” and “knowing” the speech rather than reading the speech
  • Persuasive Speech 1: Present information about a topic and urge the audience to agree with them about the topic at Lower School Assembly
  • Tribute Speech 2: Give a tribute speech to someone they respect or admire at Lower School Assembly
  • Optional Persuasive Speech (grades 3-5): Present campaign speeches at Lower School assembly if interested in running for student council offices (President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer and Sergeant at Arms)
Sixth Grade 
  • Learn about communication best practices
  • Self-appraise communication skills
  • Learn about the do’s and don’ts of public speaking through P.V.L.E.G.S. (Poise, Voice, Life, Eye Contact, Gestures and Speed)
  • Practice introduction, impromptu and demonstration speeches
  • Present informational demonstration speech which combines a typical demonstration speech with a research component
Seventh Grade 
  • Develop persuasive speaking skills through debate, infomercials and impromptu
  • Learn about persuasive methods of rhetoric (Ethos, Pathos and Logos) and incorporate these methods into the final speeches
  • Learn the fundamentals of debate and participate in a 2 topic debate in which the class is divided into four groups, each on one side of a topic 
  • Formulate claims and research their evidence to back up assertions
  • Brainstorm potential arguments made by the opposing side and construct rebuttals to refute these arguments
Eighth Grade 
  • Expand and refine public speaking skills 
  • Present speeches on impromptu, show and tell
  • Provide student-led selection of topic and style allowing for creativity
