Performing Arts

Kindergarten

First Grade

  • Learn how to read notes middle C, D, E, F and G on the treble clef
  • Play various classroom instruments with a steady beat and a variety of rhythmic patterns

Second Grade

Third Grade

Fourth Grade

  • Sing/play independently and with three parts
Fifth Grade 
  • Join 5th grade band and pep band as an elective offering
  • Attend Cleveland Orchestra concert

  • Create 16 bar melodic and rhythmic playing exercises using whole, half, quarter, 8th and 16th notes and whole, half, quarter and 8th rests

Sixth Grade 

Performing Arts
  • Explore the various types of performing arts: Music, Dance, Theatre, Technical Theatre and Performance Art
  • Apply basic stage directions
  • Collaborate on a culminating group theatre piece either extracted from a larger piece or transformed from familiar literature
Band
  • Solidify beginning playing skills and move on to intermediate level playing skills and musical understanding 
  • Encourage participation in Solo and Ensemble contest in the Spring
  • Learn scales – C – F – Bb – Eb
  • Identify and describe the 6th grade list of theory symbols and terms
  • Identify and perform rhythms using whole, half, quarter and eighth notes/rests
  • 2/4 – 3/4 – and 4/4 time signatures
  • Students submit digital recordings of playing assignment for the week

Seventh Grade 

Performing Arts
  • Identify and apply the aspects of effective story and script formatting
  • Work with various types of plays and construct plans for technical specifications, props and costumes
  • Application of knowledge and collaboration in practice writing and performing a One Act Play
Band
  • Master scales – C – F – Bb – Eb – G – D - and chromatic scale one octave
  • Identify and describe the 7th grade list of theory symbols and terms
  • Identify and perform rhythms using whole, half, quarter and eighth notes/rests
  • Introduce 16th notes 2/4 – 3/4 – 4/4 and 6/8 time signatures

Eighth Grade 

Performing Arts
  • Explore basic acting and dance techniques while preparing monologues or partner scenes
  • Apply healthy movement and design choreography to music
Band

  • Identify and describe the 8th grade list of theory symbols and terms

Performing Arts

Concert Choir
  • Develop skills through choral preparation of repertoire students in proper vocal technique, music theory, music literacy, musical expression and performance skills
  • Explore historical and cultural impact of music
  • Encourage participation for more than one year to develop further musicianship and ensemble

Guitar I and II
  • Develop fluency on the Guitar in folk and basic fingerpicking styles
  • Examine playing techniques, chord progressions, transposition, basic music theory, genres and styles of playing
  • Practice songwriting by performing the Blues and writing own song as a culminating project
  • Examine standard song structures and performing group structure
  • Create a cover of repertoire selected from pop, blues, rock, or folk genres with classmates as a culminating project

Piano
  • Study the history, standard repertoire and genres performed on the instrument
  • Practice ear training, music theory and sight-reading
  • Perform in ensemble with other students

Acting I and II
  • Cover theatre history, play production and performance techniques
  • Analyze plays and characters from the standard canon
  • Study scene work, acting techniques and characterization
  • Explore improvisation techniques, advanced acting techniques and examination of modern theatre works
  • Prepare a portfolio of audition materials and practice audition techniques as a culminating project of the semester

Dance (Foundation, Intermediate, Advanced and Choreography)
  • Exposure to a variety of genres including: Jazz, Ballet, Hip-Hop and Tap
  • Combine fitness and the arts as students practice proper dance technique, learn terminology, look at examples of prominent dancers in history and examine current trends in dance
  • Develop proper dance technique and terminology
  • Gain the ability to learn and create their own choreography, which they will have the opportunity to teach to younger students
