Mathematics


Pre-Kindergarten (3 years old)
  • Develop number sense, spatial sense, and sense of time by following daily schedules
  • Participate in calendar activities and multi-modal activities including play
  • Identify, extend, and create patterns
  • Sort, classify and compare objects by one attribute, similarities or differences
  • Measure with non-standard units
  • Begin to use positional words in conversation and play (e.g. behind, between, etc.)
  • Use blocks as non-standard units of measurement to measure lengths (carpet, tables, etc.)
  • Count to 10 and identify numerals 0-10
  • Accurately determine how many objects are in a group of 5 or less
  • Begin writing scribbles/forms for numbers

Pre-Kindergarten (4 years old)
  • Demonstrate knowledge of number names, one-to-one correspondence, sequencing while counting and the relationships among written numerals

Kindergarten

First Grade

Algebra I
  • Study the classical topics of Algebra I: Linear functions and inequalities, linear systems, absolute value equations, exponents, exponential functions, factoring, quadratic equations, quadratic functions, radical functions, rational equations and probability and statistics

Geometry
  • Explore traditional and formal Euclidean geometry
  • Develop the deductive geometric proof
  • Solve algebraic problems dealing with geometric relationships and coordinate geometry
  • Topics include basic geometric relationships with lines, segments, planes and angles
  • Study other topics are transformations, congruent triangles, relationships within triangles, quadrilaterals, polygons, similarity, right triangles, triangle trigonometry, circle, area and volume

Geometry Honors
  • Expand on topics from the regular Geometry course
  • Emphasis on theory and coordinate geometry
  • Collaboration between students on projects, work in groups, and use the Cabri 2 Plus Geometry computer program

Algebra II
  • Study more advanced topics in algebra, including a review of linear equations and inequalities, systems of equations and inequalities, linear, quadratic, polynomial, inverse, radical, rational, exponential, and logarithmic equations and functions, conic sections, sequences and series, an introduction to statistics/probability and trigonometry

Algebra II Honors
  • Continue the curriculum from Algebra II with a stronger connection leading towards Pre-Calculus Honors
  • Review linear functions before other topics are taught in greater depth and at a faster pace

Algebra B
  • Intended for students who would need more time and explanation to master Algebra II concepts
  • Study the equivalent to two-thirds of the material covered in Algebra II 
Algebra C
  • Complete the Algebra II credit for students who took Algebra B the previous year

College Algebra
  • Explore concepts which include a deeper study of exponential and logarithmic functions
  • Develop an understanding of transformations, domains and algorithms
  • Study trigonometric functions and conic sections

Pre-Calculus
  • Review topics from Algebra II, concentrating on parent functions and their transformations
  • Strengthen students' study of conics, polynomial functions, rational functions and trigonometric functions
  • Introduced to vectors, matrices, and polar coordinates

Pre-Calculus Honors
  • Emphasis placed on algorithms, applications, and theory
  • Aligned with the concepts of Pre-Calculus, except there is an in-depth study of vectors, polar coordinates and functions, matrices, sequences and series

Applied Differential Calculus
  • Expanded course for the student who would like to learn the basics of calculus
  • Explore concepts of limits and the derivatives of polynomial, rational, algebraic, exponential and logarithmic functions and various applications using those concepts and functions
  • Investigate basic integration techniques

AP Calculus AB
  • Expand understanding of functions as applied to the concepts of limits, derivatives, and integrals
  • Study theory and applications of derivatives and integrals, limits, definite integral and applications of the derivative and the integral

AP Calculus BC with Multivariable Calculus
  • Introduction to sequences and series and their manipulations plus parametric and polar equation systems including derivative and integral applications
  • Develop an understanding of three-dimensional vectors, geometric analysis, multi-variable derivation and multiple integration
Probability & Statistics
  • Learn the descriptive and basic inferential statistics and the fundamental concepts of probability and probability distributions

Finances and Efficiency
  • Provide students a basic understanding of personal finances and business efficiency by learning the math at the core of both
  • Topics include:
  • Banking: savings, checking, credit cards, taxes
  • Financing: loans & interest, home loans, auto loans, insurance
  • Investing: bonds, stocks, mutual funds, risk & diversification, inflation
  • Business Efficiency: urban services, management science, and planning & scheduling

Computer Science Principles
  • Introduction to the fundamental concepts of computer science and challenges
  • Explore how computing and technology can impact the world
  • Develop creative problem solving skills, analyze real-world applications, and utilize peer instruction
  • Emphasis on the major themes of computer science include: Abstraction, Creativity, Algorithms, Data and Information, Internet, Programming, and Social and Global Impact

AP Computer Science Principles
  • Introduction to the fundamental concepts of computer science and challenge students to explore how computing and technology can impact the world

Engineering I
  • Introduce students to the world of engineering through robotics
  • Learn applied physics and how to use 3D CAD software through designing an elite robot
  • Explore engineering careers by investigating and/or visiting colleges, engineering professionals and facilities that benefit from engineering

Engineering II
  • Continue the study of engineering through hands-on based projects, while keeping a daily journal of activities
  • Complete projects such as TI-84 programming, model bridges, simple machines, an in-house FIRST Lego Mindstorm competition, and/or the AWT Robobots competition
