Physical Education
Physical Education is an integral part of the total school curriculum. A comprehensive physical education program encompasses development in the psychomotor, cognitive and affective domains. Our primary goal is the development of the total individual. Skills, knowledge and attitudes acquired through a comprehensive physical education serve to develop and maintain health and to enhance one’s quality of life.
Physical Education (9-12) required
The Andrews Osborne Academy Physical Education course is concerned with the teaching of skills, knowledge, and attitudes in activities concerned primarily with body movement. The program provides each student with an opportunity to assess his or her own fitness and to develop skills and understanding that will enable them to enjoy a productive experience at AOA. The physical education program offers instruction in basic skill development in team sports, individual sports, recreational activities, and fitness.
Health Science – required
The Primary purpose of health science education is to gain knowledge about health so that actions can be taken that will improve personal health, the health of others and the quality of the environment. Health science at AOA explores the areas of mental health, human growth and development, sexually transmitted diseases, substance use and abuse, nutrition and stress management. The student will also earn certification in the American Red Cross Standard First Aid and CPR course. As seniors, students will renew their certification. Throughout the semester, each student will be encouraged to assess his or her own level of wellness and to focus on prevention.
CPR (12) – required
A certified instructor in cardiopulmonary resuscitation will teach the American Red Cross Community CPR course. Students learn the proper life-saving techniques which can be applied until trained professionals take over. The course will cover rescue breathing, dealing with a victim who has an obstructed airway (Heimlich Maneuver), and CPR for conscious and unconscious infants, children, and adults. American Red Cross certification will be given to those who fulfill the requirements.
